Dr Bullen and the team at Circulation Health offer specialist ultrasound diagnosis for venous insufficiency and targeted modern treatments like ablation and sclerotherapy.
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when the veins in the legs are not able to efficiently return blood to the heart. This happens when the valves inside the veins become weak or damaged, allowing blood to flow backwards and pool in the legs.
Venous insufficiency can lead to:
Symptoms may be mild at first but often worsen over time without treatment. Some people are concerned about appearance, while others experience symptoms that affect daily activities and quality of life.
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are visible under the skin. They are a common sign of venous insufficiency and usually occur in the legs due to increased pressure in the veins.
Spider veins are very small veins close to the surface of the skin. They may appear red, blue or purple and often look like fine branches or a web.
Spider veins are usually harmless, but they can sometimes indicate underlying venous insufficiency.
You may be at higher risk if you:
Regular movement, leg elevation when resting and wearing compression stockings can help manage symptoms.
Ultrasound is the gold standard, non-invasive, and first-line imaging test for diagnosing chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and planning treatment.
All treatments are minimally invasive and performed in our clinic rooms. Dr Bullen will assess your veins using ultrasound and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your condition.
Injection treatment (Sclerotherapy)
A fine needle is used to inject a solution into the vein, causing it to close and gradually fade. More than one treatment session may be required.
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
Used for deeper veins that are not visible on the skin. Ultrasound allows precise and safe treatment.
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
Heat energy is used to seal larger problem veins. This is performed under local anaesthetic through a small catheter.
Glue treatment
A medical adhesive is used to close the affected vein. Most people return to normal activities quickly and only need compression stockings for a short period.
