Dr Bullen and the team at Circulation Health offer specialist ultrasound diagnosis for venous insufficiency and targeted modern treatments like ablation and sclerotherapy.

What is venous insufficiency?

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when the veins in the legs are not able to efficiently return blood to the heart. This happens when the valves inside the veins become weak or damaged, allowing blood to flow backwards and pool in the legs.

Venous insufficiency can lead to:

  • Aching, heaviness or pain in the legs
  • Swelling of the legs or ankles
  • Tired, restless or itchy legs
  • Skin colour changes (brown or red staining)
  • Skin thickening or inflammation
  • Varicose veins
  • Leg ulcers if left untreated
  • Rarely, blood clots

Symptoms may be mild at first but often worsen over time without treatment. Some people are concerned about appearance, while others experience symptoms that affect daily activities and quality of life.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are visible under the skin. They are a common sign of venous insufficiency and usually occur in the legs due to increased pressure in the veins.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are very small veins close to the surface of the skin. They may appear red, blue or purple and often look like fine branches or a web.

Spider veins are usually harmless, but they can sometimes indicate underlying venous insufficiency.

Who is more likely to develop venous insufficiency?

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Have a family history of vein disease
  • Are female
  • Have been pregnant
  • Are overweight
  • Stand or sit for long periods
  • Have had previous blood clots or leg injuries

Regular movement, leg elevation when resting and wearing compression stockings can help manage symptoms.

Assessment and diagnosis of venous insufficiency

Ultrasound is the gold standard, non-invasive, and first-line imaging test for diagnosing chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and planning treatment.

  • Visualise vein anatomy, valves, and obstructions
  • Assess blood flow direction, velocity, and reflux
  • Create a 'vein map' to plan treatment options

Treatment at Circulation Health

All treatments are minimally invasive and performed in our clinic rooms. Dr Bullen will assess your veins using ultrasound and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your condition.

Injection treatment (Sclerotherapy)
A fine needle is used to inject a solution into the vein, causing it to close and gradually fade. More than one treatment session may be required.

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
Used for deeper veins that are not visible on the skin. Ultrasound allows precise and safe treatment.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
Heat energy is used to seal larger problem veins. This is performed under local anaesthetic through a small catheter.

Glue treatment
A medical adhesive is used to close the affected vein. Most people return to normal activities quickly and only need compression stockings for a short period.

After Your Treatment

Compression stockings

  • Compression stockings are required after treatment
  • Usually worn continuously for the first week
  • After some treatments, worn during the day for a second week
  • Stockings are fitted and supplied by our clinic

Activity and exercise

  • Walk daily for 30-60 minutes
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, running or heavy lifting for the first week
  • Staying active helps reduce the risk of blood clots

Pain and bruising

  • Mild pain, tightness and bruising are common
  • Symptoms usually improve within 1–2 weeks
  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen may help

Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening calf pain
  • Sudden shortness of breath
