What is a vascular ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive test that helps your doctor diagnose and treat your medical problem. By definition, ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to form an image of structures and organs within your body. For vascular ultrasound, this involves the assessment of blood vessels (arteries and veins).

Our clinic uses the Canon Aplio i600 ultrasound systems for advanced diagnostics and precise interventional work.

How does ultrasound work?

Ultrasound scanners consist of a console containing a computer and electronics, a video display screen and a transducer that is used to scan the body and blood vessels. The transducer is a small hand-held device that sends out high frequency sound waves into the body and then listens for the returning echoes from the tissues in the body. The principles are similar to sonar used by boats and submariners. The Doppler component provides information on the blood flow such as the presence or absence of flow, speed and direction of flow.

Can ultrasound be harmful?

Ultrasound has been used commonly for several decades around the world. Even with all this use, no harmful effects have been documented.

How do I prepare for my ultrasound examination?

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. You may be asked to remove some items of clothing and jewellery and wear a gown during the procedure.

Some ultrasounds require you to go without food for 8-12 hours prior to the examination, however you will be informed if this is the case.

What happens during an ultrasound?

A qualified sonographer with specialised training in vascular ultrasound will perform the study.

Most ultrasound examinations are painless, fast and easy. After you are positioned on the examination table, the sonographer will apply some cold water-based gel on your skin and then place the transducer firmly against your body, moving it back and forth over the area of interest. If scanning is performed over an area of tenderness, you may feel pressure or minor pain from the transducer.

The time required depends on the particular examination but most scans take 30 minutes - 1 hour.

Who interprets the results and how do I get them?

The vascular sonographer will analyse the images and generate a report for the doctor to review and finalise, before sending the report to your referring doctor. It is then up to your referring doctor to share the results with you. If the test is referred on an urgent basis, the results will be forwarded on the same day to your doctor.
