Medicines are an important part of treating blood vessel problems.

They help improve blood flow and lower the risk of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke. Every patient and/or situation is different. Your doctor will tell you which medicines you need and how to take them safely.

Common Vascular Medicines

Blood Thinners
Help prevent blood clots.

Examples:
Aspirin, Clopidogrel (Plavix®), Warfarin, Apixaban (Eliquis®), Rivaroxaban (Xarelto®)

  • Take exactly as prescribed
  • Do not stop taking these medications without medical advice
  • Tell your doctor if you have bleeding or easy bruising

Cholesterol Medicines (Statins)
Protect blood vessels and lower cholesterol.

Examples:
Atorvastatin, Rosuvastatin

  • Usually taken once a day
  • Keep taking even if you feel well
  • Report muscle pain to your doctor

Blood Pressure Medicines
Lower blood pressure and protect arteries.

Examples:
Perindopril, Amlodipine, Irbesartan

  • Take every day as prescribed
  • Dizziness may occur when starting
  • Do not stop suddenly

Medicines for Leg Pain When Walking
Some people may need medicine to improve walking distance. Your doctor will advise if this is right for you.

Taking Your Medicines Safely

  • Take medicines at the same time each day
  • Use a pill box if helpful
  • Keep a list of all medicines
  • Bring your medicines to appointments
  • Tell your doctor about side effects or missed doses
